Selection Update; Preakness Win

By lonespeed

Obviously, I’m not surprised BIG BROWN walked away with the Preakness Stakes this past Saturday.  Afterall, he was 1-5 and clearly deserved to be the overwhelming favorite.

I thought there was a slight possiblity he would fail in the Preakness, but it certainly wasn’t enough for me to play against him.

Instead of playing high-risk exotics with lower than normal payouts by keying around Big Brown, I chose a single ’show’ wager as my primary Preakness wager.

I’m a bit disappointed by the odds I received on ICABAD CRANE.  Going into the weekend, I thought the show wager would pay around $8-10.00 regardless of where Big Brown finished.  Unfortunately it paid $5.60.

Apparently, some other people found the Icabad Crane band-wagon and jumped on.

I can only dream of what the show pool would have paid had Big Brown actually faltered.

As for the undercard, nothing really looked that appealing once I started delving into the past performances.  I was very disappointed with some of the field sizes for Preakness Day, and as usual, Pimlico was playing to the favorites.

Here is a summary of my selections for the 2008 Triple Crown season  thus far.  I’m almost back in the black!

Beginning Purse (5/1/2008): $500.00
Kentucky Oaks: -$90.00
Kentucky Derby: -$104.00
Preakenss Stakes: +$180.00
Net Profit: -$14.00
Remaining Purse: $486.00

Worth pointing out that the place bet on Big Brown was unusually high compared to the win total; I believe it actually paid MORE than the win ticket. Look for this to occur again in the Belmont, as everyone is going to want to bet on history being made. Tons of money will be put on him to win, and folks will be picking anyone EXCEPT Big Brown to come in 2nd.
