Laugh if you want: I placed a $1 bet on Icabad to show. It paid $2.80.
I also had the Big Brown-Icabad Crane exacta, so you can imagine how pissed I was when Macho nipped him by a neck. (I know the official call is 1/2 a length, but I like to think it was closer.)
I know the field was weak this go ’round, but has your opinion of BB’s vulnerability changed yet?

Imagine how much that show ticket would have paid had Big Brown finsihed out-of-the-money. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and it only paid $5.60. But that was enough to pay for my entire Preakness trip, so I’m satisfied.
Big Brown only recorded a 100 Beyer for the Preakness, as compared to say, Smarty Jones who scored a 118. Maybe his Beyer would have been more like a 102 or 103 if he hadn’t been eased a bit, but still, that’s a very mediocre Beyer for a Triple Crown race.
Problem is, a 100 Beyer was still enough to beat the Preakness field by daylight. Is Big Brown vulnerable? Well, not if his rivals aren’t capable of more than they showed Saturday.
We’ll have to see who goes to the Belmont. If anyone is capable of a figure around 105 / 106, I think he will be beaten. Most years, several fall into that category. This year, I’m still searching.
